Hello. My name is Kurt, and my fiance’s name is Jenny.

We decided we want to grill outside every day for a year.

We live in Chicago.

We both love food and we love preparing it. We also like preparing it together, when our schedules permit. We moved into a new place a few months ago, and some of the appliances are a bit on the old side. The microwave didn’t work at all when we moved in, but we didn’t really care.

What did bother us was the soonafter failure of the oven. Baked chicken is one of the many dishes Jenny and I enjoy very much, and we usually baked a bird every week. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the money to purchase a new oven and range right away.

So we bought a grill.

We both like grilling a lot.

Due to our limited access to heat sources, we began preparing our meals on the grill nearly every day. About a month ago, after eating what I think were two ribeyes, one of us commented that we should try to grill every day for a year.

We laughed about the idea of that, especially considering the low temperatures and high winds the winter would surely bring. However, after a few more weeks, we decided it was something that would be a great deal of fun to do together.

A whole year. Lordy.

We think we can do it.

There will no doubt be days when we won’t want to light charcoal  on the sidewalk or put in the effort to marinate, butcher, and baste. There will be days when ordering a pizza will seem like a much easier alternative.

But we’ve decided to do it anyway.

Some days, we’ll do interesting and/or more challenging dishes (whole fish, pizza, desserts, etc.).

Some days we’ll do dishes that take a mere matter of minutes (after all, Jenny makes the best barbecue grilled chicken wings, which I could eat every day). While we will cook several items multiple times over the next year, we plan to never duplicate a dish.

Once we do grilled eggplant Parmesan (which we may never do, who knows?), you won’t see it again.

While we don’t plan to do completely composed dishes each day, we will always prepare a meal that incorporates the grill in some manner.

While I’ve always been a little cynical about blogging, I feel good about doing this.

I have no idea whether or not anyone will read it or have any interest in it if they do. If anything, this is a way for Jenny and I to document this project.

So let’s go.

For day one, we decided to do a few things that we both love. Lamb rack, asparagus, and brussels sprouts.

Hello Kurt and Jenny: Kurt, your mom told me of yours and Jenny’s blog so I wanted to tell you I am excited about this. Papa will read it every day now that we know. This is great as you now will bring back your writing(which I think you are gifted and also share your knowledge of grilling and we also will get to know Jenny through her offerings. While we don’t have a grill as of now, we just may have to get one and try some of your receips! Hope all is well all along the way. Love MaMa

    • Thanks Mama! I’m so glad you and Papa are reading. You’ve always been so supportive of me, and especially my writing. We’re having fun! It’s going to get difficult, but we’re certain we can make it the whole year. I miss you both very much. I love you! Keep reading and we’ll keep cooking.

  2. Hey guys, I run a grilling organization called Manbque and I really like what you guys are doing. Perhaps we can grill some stuff up together? Please feel free to contact me inf you’re interested.

    • Hey, Jesse. I read about your organization, and I’m a little unclear on the male only thing for the meetings. As I’m sure you read, Jenny and I do this thing together. As long as we’re both able to be a part of what you’re doing, we’ll be there.

      • Haha, no worries. Only part of our organization is male only. We do coed events every month. You can certainly both be a part of it. In fact, my girfriend would also join us.

  3. Sounds like a blast. Send us an email and we’ll hash it out.
